Epidemic Exposure, Financial Technology, and the Digital Divide

We ask whether epidemic exposure leads to a shift in financial technology usage and who participates this shift. exploit dataset combining Gallup World Polls Global Findex surveys for some 250,000 individuals 140 countries, merging them with information on the incidence of epidemics local 3G internet infrastructure. Epidemic is associated an increase remote-access (online/mobile) banking substitution from bank branch-based ATM activity. Heterogeneity response centers age, income employment respondents. Young, high-income earners full-time have greatest tendency online/mobile trans-actions epidemics. These effects are larger better exante signal coverage, highlighting role digital divide adaption new technologies necessitated by adverse external shocks.
